Maybank’s decision to give due consideration to all law firms to do its work is welcomed. It is not a question of bumi and non-bumi. It is who is capable. And I dare say that there are now many bumiputra law firms that outshine others purely through commitment and sheer hard work. I am confident that such establishments will be chosen without any regulations or quotas. Legal retention by banks are for differing fields. It is a matter of getting expertise in that particular area. It is time to move away from restrictions of this nature, especially in the light of globalisation and free trade agreements. Liberalisation in all professions, including law, will certainly enhance the nation’s competitiveness.
