One of the ways for the Kedah State Government to loose the next election is to carry on with the Menteri Besar’s preposterous plan to chop down one million trees, furthermore, trees in water catchments areas. In fact it will be good for the Barisan Nasional if he does so, as it will boost the latter’s chances to recapture the State. When water-supply is compromised due to this rash move, and the people suffer, they will know whom to vote for.
While the whole world is trying to preserve forests, particularly in relation to water conservation, here we have certain people with strange ideas, resulting in the destruction of our famous virgin jungle, our national pride. Even children are conscious of the beauty of Malaysian flora and fauna.
Does the Kedah PAS Government know anything at all about ecosystems and biodiversity? It looks like they come from some bygone era.
It is also amusing to note that Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng is squirming in his seat over the issue. Not only will ravaging trees in Kedah jeopardize water supply to Penang, it will expose the foolhardiness of his Pakatan partner.
But then again, the Kedah Menteri Besar now seems to be distancing himself from the Pakatan Rakyat, questioning the understanding reached by their leaders for common policy.
Let the circus continue!
Dato Dr. S. Vijayaratnam,
Vice President,
