The Central Working Committee (CWC) of Gerakan in a scheduled meeting last night decided to send a show cause letter to Dato’ Lee Kah Choon, asking him to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.
This is in response to his acceptance of two (2) top posts in the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and investPenang (iP).
The party has previously directed party members to relinquish all appointments as municipal and district councillors and Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) members in all states presently ruled by Pakatan Rakyat after the General Elections.
Therefore, Dato’ Lee Kah Choon’s actions are in contravention with the principle and spirit of this general directive of the party.
This directive is based on the premise that Gerakan now has to play the role as an effective opposition in Penang. We can’t do this objectively if our own members hold key positions in the state and local administration.
What is the political motive of the Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in appointing Dato’ Lee Kah Choon? Dato’ Lee has no direct experience in promoting investment in the industrial sector. So far, he has experience as a lawyer and a parliamentary secretary of the Health Ministry, which is unrelated to the manufacturing industry.
In contrast, the previous state government under Barisan Nasional appointed as investPenang Executive Committee (EC) Chairman, Dato’ Kalsom Abdul Rahman, who was then the Chairman of SMIDEC (Small Medium Industry Development Corporation) of Malaysia and a former Deputy Secretary-General of MITI (Ministry of Trade and Industry).
The EC Deputy Chairman of iP then was Dato’ Seri Kelvin Kiew who is a well accomplished industrialist with extensive international connections. Both Kalsom and Kelvin have a wealth of experience in investment and its promotion.
As the industrial sector is Penang’s most important economic sector, it is not proper for Lim Guan Eng to play politics this way, which may jeopardize Penang’s effort and ability to effectively attract investment into Penang.
