The de-classification of the Straits of Malacca as a war-risk zone by Lloyds of London is significant. It is indeed a feather in the caps of the littoral states, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and to a lesser extent, Thailand. It illustrates remarkable capability in addressing piracy and terrorism, a field in which Western nations have not made much headway.
Add to this recent swoops on militant and extremist elements in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, and you have a success story. Notice that operations have been proceeding quietly, efficiently, devoid of fanfare. Silent strikes, no publicity. As a result, Malaysia and Singapore have been spared the horrors of terrorism. Even the Indonesian situation has improved tremendously since the Bali and Jakarta bombings. Security cooperation had been excellent.
Congratulations to law-enforcement agencies involved. The US and UK could certainly learn a thing or two here. Notwithstanding that, however, internal security forces are urged not to let down their guard, and continue to be vigilant. The people are grateful, and truly appreciate their efforts.
