Revelations after the horrific bus accident near Bukit Gantang have thrown light on some alarming practices. Can we really put the blame wholly on the unfortunate driver? Judging from the work conditions, he was certainly under tremendous pressure.
Hence, the system of paying express drivers according to the number of trips they make must cease; and it is a pittance at that. Instead, they should receive a fixed salary and specified, reasonable working hours.
Hence, there is no need for them to drive at breakneck speeds to maximize income. Those who drive at night must be given adequate rest. They have to be assured of medical benefits, EPF and SOCSO. Otherwise it is exploitation.
How can bus drivers be expected drive safely and stick to the speed limit, when the desire of bus companies seems to put profits above safety? Bus drivers are human beings who deserve proper terms of employment, more so when the lives of 40 or so passengers are in their hands.
