School may turn co-ed

SMJK Phor Tay may soon start recruiting boys for the school which will be relocated to its Sungai Dua site in 2009.

This is because the school board of director had agreed to allow more students to study there. SMJK Phor Tay is a girls’ school located in Bagan Jermal.

“The Chinese community has been looking forward to having a Chinese secondary school in Bayan Baru. In view of this, we want to turn Phor Tay into a co-educational high school,” said relocation committee member Loh Nam Hooi recently.

He said this after receiving a mock cheque from Gerakan Bayan Baru Division chairman Wong Mun Hoe.

Among those present were divi-sion vice chairman Goh Kheng Sneah, secretary Teh Leong Meng and youth secretary Tan Cheng Lim.

He said the board of directors would submit their application to the Education Department soon.

Wong said the division raised RM250,147 for the school’s relo-cation during a dinner earlier this year.

“It is not much as the new school costs over RM24mil, but we will do our best to ensure the school has sufficient funds for the relocation,” he said.
