PENANG, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- Gerakan has welcomed the government's decision to set up a royal commission to probe the video clip featuring a purported telephone conversation between a prominent lawyer and a senior judge over the appointment of judges.
Party acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said a royal commission vested with full powers would be able to conduct a thorough investigation and recommend appropriate action if there was any wrongdoing.
"This will hopefully settle once and for all the video clip controversy which has been very unsettling to the public," he said in a statement today.
"It's important that appropriate steps be taken to restore public confidence in our judiciary," said Dr Koh.
Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yesterday announced that a royal commission would be set up to investigate the video clip.
The prime minister said the establishment of the commission was deemed appropriate based on the report by a three-man panel set up to determine the authenticity of the video clip recently.
