PENANG: Public awareness on government ICT plans is unsatisfactory.
Deputy Information Minister Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye said less than 5% of 4,000 respondents of a survey knew about the Government's Malaysian Information, Communications and Multimedia Services 886 (MyICMS 886) launched in 2005.
“Also, only less than 10% was aware of the state's K-ICT (Knowledge-ICT) plan,” said Chia, who based his comments on a Universiti Sains Malaysia survey.
“About 50% of the respondents said they used computers for games, entertainment, multimedia and education,” he told newsmen after launching the ICT Roadshow on Innovation in Public Service Delivery at Penang Equatorial Hotel on Monday.
The public survey on Internet usage was presented to the state government in August, he said.
“Penang's K-ICT Council is finding ways to increase public awareness on the Government's ICT plans.
“Suggestions include setting up booths at computer fairs and joining ICT seminars,” said Chia, who is a member of the council.
The roadshow was jointly organised by Sains Group of Companies, Tech Innovasi Sdn Bhd and the Silicon Group of Companies.
