FACTORIES in prisons? This is likely to become a reality under the Ninth Malaysia Plan. The factories will be linked to buildings housing the prisoners, with the Jasin prison in Malacca undertaking the pilot project.

Deputy Internal Security Minister Chia Kwang Chye said today the in-house prison factories would be involved in activities such as manufacturing electronic items and providing laundry services to hotels and restaurants.

The Government views this as another measure in the prison inmate rehabilitation programme.
