GERAKAN DENIES LINKS WITH US-BASED THINK TANK IRI

PRESS STATEMENT BY

GERAKAN VICE-PRESIDENT

DATUK A. KOHILAN PILLAY

AUGUST 7, 2018

  1. We deny an allegation by PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar who reportedly claimed that Gerakan with the knowledge of the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) government has received training from the International Republican Institute (IRI), a US-based think tank is said to be closely linked to senior Republican figures and former high-ranking US intelligence officers.
  2. It was a baseless and unfounded allegation, Gerakan does not have any contact with the IRI. The Party has never undergone any training conducted by the IRI, and neither did we receive any form of cooperation or assistance from the IRI.
  3. Gerakan is fully committed to upholding and enhancing the electoral democracy of the country. We are firmly against any form of hostile foreign interference to keep our domestic choices free and fair.
  4. However, we should not mistake all non-partisan capacity building support to political parties by foreign-based organisations, institutes and foundations as an absolute threat to our country. Malaysia must remain open to the world without reducing our sovereignty or compromising our identity.
  5. We are aware of the serious allegations regarding foreign interference in our electoral process which also implicates the Party, we are following the situation very closely.
  6. I hope Nurul Izzah could be more circumspect and discreet in her words and actions as a leader. It is important that members across the political and social spectrum consciously commit to the efforts to curtail and stop the spread of political disinformation.
