GERAKAN ECHOES PM’S CALL FOR THE YOUNG TO SEE THEMSELVES AS MALAYSIANS

BUILDING OF BANGSA MALAYSIA DOES NOT STOP BECAUSE OF CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT

PRESS STATEMENT BY

GERAKAN DEPUTY PRESIDENT

DATO’ DR CHEAH SOON HAI

JULY 2, 2018

  1. Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir’s call in a recent interview for the young to forget about racial origins and simply think themselves as pure Malaysians deserves to be lauded, it is consistent with previous efforts in promoting a national identity.
  2. Despite being in the Opposition, Gerakan supports PM’s call to talk, think and act beyond race, it is in line with our Gerakan Anak Malaysia initiative for the young to regard themselves as Malaysians.
  3. It is important for the new Pakatan Harapan (PH) government to adopt a position and uphold policies that will perpetuate prior efforts in building a ‘Bangsa Malaysia’.
  4. The commitment and efforts in cultivating a sense of togetherness and belonging among Malaysians, especially the young generation does not stop at the change of government.
  5. Malaysia is indeed a unique country demonstrating in full the concept of unity in diversity, citizens consisting of multiracial, multilingual and multi-religious are able to live together in peace and harmony, our diversity is a strength that we should harness, appreciate and be proud of.
  6. I hope PM’s statement would be effectively reflected in governance and policymaking by the PH government in near future. The adoption of such a mindset and identity as Malaysians is vital for our unity and progress as a nation, the government is the most effective advocate with the help and support from all parties.
  7. PH government and its leaders must be consistent in their views and actions before and after the 14th General Election (GE14), they are in positions of power now to make real changes and they should deliver with real actions.
  8. Also, the government’s step on making 9 agencies to operate as independent bodies and reporting directly to the Parliament is the appropriate move to reduce overlapping of jurisdiction and conflict of interest.
  9. By reporting directly to the Parliament, this will ensure transparency and accountability as well as provide a check and balance to the government of the day.
