53 Gerakan councillors tender resignation letters

All 53 local councillors from Perak Gerakan have submitted their resignation letters in various local authorities to state chief Datuk Chang Ko Youn.

They, however, have not officially tendered their resignation pending the setting up of the new tripartite state government of DAP, Parti Keadilan Rakyat and Pas, which would likely be this week when the 10 State Exco members are sworn in.

The move was made following Chang's directive to party members to resign, issued on March 16 after the party's state division meeting.

Chang confirmed today to receiving all letters but pointed out that the letters have not been formally handed to the respective local authorities.

"The new state government has yet to be formally set up. Let them do that first before we make any further move on the matter," he said.

Chang was asked to comment of rumours that four local councillors from the Taiping Municipal Council had followed up with the directive and had since resigned from their post.

The directive was made together with the party's proposed dissolution of all component parties of the Barisan Nasional and the conversion of the coalition into a single political party accepting direct membership regardless of race.

Gerakan had fared badly in the state in the recently concluded failing to secure any of the four state seats and winning only one of the three Parliamentary seats it contested.
