KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Bernama) -- The revelation by Justice Datuk Ian Chin for grounds to open himself for possible recuse in two hearings he presided in Sibu in 1997, is commendable and should be set as an example for other judges to follow, Gerakan vice-president Datuk Dr S Vijayaratnam said.
He said such action was welcome, especially in efforts to instil more transparency, independence and impartiality of the judiciary system in the country.
"This is an example for other judges to follow, if the situation demands it, and demonstrates the integrity of the members of the bench.
"The fact that Datuk Ian Chin had chosen to reveal as to what, in his words, transpired at that time, speaks for itself, and should be left to posterity," he said in a statement here today.
Yesterday, Chin had revealed that he received threats from a former prime minister in two cases he presided in 1997; one being a libel suit, and the other on an election petition matter.
