Gerakan is proposing an increase in Bumiputera quota in all public universities, in return and allocate the same amount for 10 per cent of places in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) for non-Bumiputeras and foreigners.
The party’s vice-president Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said in a statement that UiTM students should not take their protests to the streets but to discuss it rationally.
He was commenting on a street demonstration by About 5,000 UiTM students marched to the Selangor State Secretariat building on Aug 12 to show their protest against Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim’s suggestion to allocate 10 per cent of places in UiTM to non-Bumiputeras and foreigners.
Teng said the protest showed that the students were intolerant and polarised along racial lines.
