PENANG, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- Intel Malaysia is looking forward to the next 35 years of success in Malaysia as the company is one of the pioneer multinationals to commence operations in Penang in 1972.
Its managing director, Atul Bhargava, said today that about 10,000 people are working at Intel Malaysia compared to the original workforce of just 100.
He said the dedication of its Malaysian workforce has helped Intel Malaysia evolve its operations beyond assembly and test, to introduce value-added activities in process and product design and development.
"Intel Malaysia will increase its competitive edge by engaging in more value-added activities involving design and development while strengthening its capability in building and delivering quality products to our customers," he told reporters after the 35th anniversary celebration of Intel Malaysia here.
Bhargava noted that the initial investment of US$1.6 million (RM5.6 million) in 1972 has grown to more than US$3 billion (RM10.4 billion), demonstrating the company's commitment in developing the IT industry in Malaysia.
He said Intel Malaysia is also not forgetting the importance of corporate social responsibility and plans to expand its efforts through its education, environment and community outreach programmes.
Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon expressed confidence that Intel will continue to grow with Malaysia.
"On the eve of Merdeka, it brings me double joy to be here to celebrate 50 years of nationhood and Intel Malaysia's 35th anniversary. The government appreciates Intel's instrumental role in the development and growth of the electronics industry not only in Penang but also in Malaysia as a whole," he said.
Since Intel Malaysia started in Penang in 1972, it has expanded to Kulim, Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya.
