KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 (Bernama) -- The Gerakan National Youth will collate views from student leaders on the Higher Education Ministry's plan to amend the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971(UUCA).
In a statement Tuesday, its chief, Datuk Mah Siew Keong, said a special task force would be set up to receive feedback from the student leaders and make a proposal to the ministry.
"As this Act will affect our younger generation, we will meet the university student leaders soon. Let's get their opinion and input," he said.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin recently announced the proposed amendments, including to lift the restriction on varsity students' involvement in politics, which would be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat by the year end.
In welcoming the proposal, Mah said the move showed that the government was serious in raising the Malaysian higher education system, especially the standard of the country's public universities.
He said consideration by the minister to allow students to be involved in politics was a positive step forward for the country.
"Gerakan National Youth hopes it will be given urgent consideration to reflect the changing circumstances as compared with 30 years ago," he said.
